The film of this name is an American animated fantasy adventure film by acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki. This is one of the most popular family movies ever created, coming in at #14 on AFI's list of best movies ever made. It follows the fantastic adventures of ten-year-old girls (Wakka and his younger sister, Pheobe) who are suddenly turned into pigs by a magical stranger. They are soon whisked away to a strange, magical place that is populated by spirits and monsters. The film is not only an adventure story for children, but also has enough fantasy to keep even the most discriminating film enthusiast interested. The Film This fabulous script was written by Hayao Miyazaki with the help of his long time friends Isao Takahata and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. The movie was directed by his son Goro Miyazaki. It is based on a popular book of the same name written in the 1980s by British journalist Diana Wynne Jones. This book became so popular that it was translated into twenty languages and sold more than three hundred thousand copies in America alone. The Characters The story is about two children, Pheobe, who is ten years old and her little brother Wakka, who is five years old. They are orphaned when their parents are killed in a car accident. They are sent to live with their stern grandmother in Tokyo. She takes them to see the Studio Ghibli movie "Whisper of the Heart", which is all about the film's main character, Chihiro Ogino (Sen). Chihiro is a young girl who lives in Tokyo, and whose parents throw her out of the house due to their moving to a new town. She runs away from home and falls into an underground world populated by spirits, monsters and other fantastic characters. The director Hayao Miyazaki and his two friends, Isao Takahata and Yasuyoshi Tokuma were all members of the animation department at Toho Studios. The studio was located in the Musashino district of Tokyo. They started this company in 1985 with less than $30,000 dollars in financial backing. This team produced several award winning films, including "Spirited Away". These films made the company the most successful animation studio in Japan. The studio has also created animated TV shows and short films. Some of these include "Reconstruction of Evangelion" (2000), "Pray" (2002), and "The Cat Returns" (2002). Hayao Miyazaki has been a member of Ghibli since its creation in 1985 to present day. He is a multi-talented artist whose work includes directing movies, writing screenplays, producing movies and developing theme parks.
